QDR was very saddened to learn that, after a valiant struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Tom Carsey passed away on February 21, 2018. As Director of the Odum Institute for Research in Social Science, Tom was a distinguished leader in the data services community, committed to helping social scientists share their data, and render their research more rigorous and transparent. While an untiring advocate of the Odum Institute, Tom was also unfailingly kind to other individuals and institutions traveling along the same road. QDR was a fortunate beneficiary of Tom’s unstinting generosity. He served as the first chair of the repository’s Technical Advisory Board, providing invaluable advice and guidance as we began to build QDR in the early 2010s. Tom gave us many tips and ideas, was unendingly encouraging, and was always ready with a joke that helped us to put things in perspective. While Tom’s illness was a source of sadness for all of us, the grace and strength and spirit with which he continued forward were a source of inspiration. With Tom’s passing, the data services community has lost a pioneer and an intellectual leader. We will miss him.
